Inside this Australian woman’s incredible unicorn themed wedding

When it comes to planning a wedding, a lot of couples like to inject their personality into the big day.

Of course the easiest way to do this is through a theme and one Australian bride went with a very unique one for her wedding earlier this year.

Suzi and Ivan Botha went for an epic unicorn theme when they tied the knot in Glen Innes in New South Wales.

“We started with a ‘Goth Glam with a wee-splodge of Boho’ theme, but with the plethora of unicorn paraphernalia available at the moment, it kind of accidentally evolved more into Pastel Goth / Unicorn theme with  a wee-splodge of Boho,” Suzi told 9Honey.

Surprisingly her now-husband was completely on board with the theme and Suzi joked he almost expected it.

“He knew going in to this marriage that he would end up with a Hello Kitty kitchen, as I’m a collector, so he was prepared,” said the 38-year-old. 

But the theme wasn’t the only aspect of the day that Suzi decided to spice up.

“I was never going to be a traditional bride,” she said. “I needed a dress that shouted unique and quirky.”

Suzi’s dress was pastel purple with a floral applique all over it and from the minute she saw it on another bride, she knew she had to have it.

“I’m a florist, so having the flowers on it made so much sense. I barely thought about it before hitting BUY,” she explained.

Aside from finding the perfect dress, Suzi added that it was also one of her biggest bargains for the wedding.

“My biggest save was my dress. I scored it for less than $300 including alterations and it's usually the thing brides splurge the most on,” she said.

“Our biggest spend was on our photographer but we knew that from the get-go, the photos were where we wanted to spend money and have the best,” Suzi added.

Like most couples planning a wedding, Suzi and Ivan had a ball-park figure for their budget but she admitted they did go a bit over.

“You’d be surprised how expensive little things like invitations are even when DIYing. The cost of postage was hectic! The envelopes, paper, embellishments, it all adds up,” said Suzi.

“I think we spent more on that than we would have had we bought them - however, they were one of a kind and epic! Other DIY elements helped a lot with keeping costs down,” she explained.

The standout feature of the day – aside from her vibrant dress – was the unicorn.

That’s right, the couple had a ‘real’ unicorn present for their photos.

“Who doesn't want a legit unicorn at some stage of their lives?” Suzi fired back when asked how the idea came about.

“It was a sort of joke to begin with, I said ‘Hey, how cool would it be to have an actual unicorn?!’ Then the brain started humming into gear and I thought; hang on. I could actually do this!”

Suzi made the horn herself and posted on a local Buy Swap Sell site to see if anyone was willing to lend a horse for the day and she was inundated with replies.

It looked like the most perfect day for Suzi and Ivan and photographer Phoebe Hofstede did a magical job capturing every moment.
