Sticky situations: Are weddings getting out of control?

Bridezillas. Wedding cakes bigger than a car. Couples spending more than a house deposit on their big day. 

Are wedding getting out of control?

The 9Honey superstars and I thrashed this out for this week’s Sticky Situations.

According to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission's latest data, the average wedding in Australia costs $36,200 with the bulk of the cost going towards food and alcohol.

That’s a lot of dosh. You’re basically paying for your friends and family to get drunk.

I think people need to spend more time finding the perfect husband rather than planning the perfect wedding.  

Also, guests are now expected to fork out a bundle to attend weddings. It all adds up; bridal showers, hen’s nights, babysitters on the day, presents and accommodation.  

A popular trend is destination weddings but some see them as selfish while others think it’s a great excuse for a holiday.

I’m guilty of this one. My husband and I got married in Mexico. Forty guests flew themselves over and we put on a shindig that cost mere pesos!  

So I say calm the farm. Weddings are fun but they shouldn’t send you broke or bankrupt your friends.
