Wife mad at husband as he refuses to tell coworkers he is married

A man has questioned whether it's wrong to keep his marital status from his colleagues in a bid to keep his life "separate from work".

The anonymous school teacher explains that in the three years he's been working in his current role, he has never revealed to coworkers that he was married.

"I work as a teacher and I'm one of the teachers that pretty much doesn't associate with the co-workers apart from lunch," he writes in a post to Reddit.

While the man claims to have "made friends" at his work place, he insists the topic of his wife has neither "come up" in conversation, nor been "brought up" by himself.

He adds that he also doesn't wear his wedding band at work.

"I've been saying technically true things to their questions on if I'm doing anything," he clarifies, adding, "like just saying that I'm spending time with family or something or other."

The situation has caused strife in his relationship during the coronavirus pandemic, as the man, who has been teaching online for the past two months, was recently interrupted during a Zoom meeting when his partner returned home.

"My co-workers asked me who the woman that passed by was and she just said, 'Hi everyone! I'm [wife's name]'," the man explains.

"They ask [sic] again who she is and she says that she's my wife."

The incident sparked curiosity among the man's colleagues, and he reveals they were "in shock" and "never knew" he was married.

"My wife left and when she came back home she got mad at me that I never told my coworkers about her," he continues.

Though the man believes his personal life is none of his colleagues' business, the situation sparked a fight between him and his wife.

"[My wife] said some bullshit about hiding her and other emotionally charged stuff and now we're not talking too much," he says.

The man wants to know whether he is in the wrong for his actions, and Reddit users have shared their opinions in droves.

"How did three years go by and you never mention you had a wife. It's not something you HAVE to tell everyone I agree but never mentioning her is something else," one writes.

"If I worked with someone for three years and chatted with them from time to time, and found out they take off their ring when they come to work and have been lying by omission for three years when people ask what you're doing this weekend etc, I'd be terrified of that person. That's the kind of thing I'd expect a serial killer to do," another says.

"He doesn't even wear a ring. That's not a concern for privacy. No one takes off their ring unless they have something to hide," another comment reads.

Clearly, certain work water-cooler conversations are a must-have.
