A florist reveals top tips on how to pick the best flowers for Valentine's Day, while sticking to a budget
Valentine's Day is almost upon us and 'tis the season to give (and receive) flowers.
9Honey talks to florist Bryce Heyworth — the co-founder of recently opened September Studios — about how to make your flower bouquet truly something special this year (while sticking to a budget too).
Heyworth's studio is located in Sydney's Darlinghurst where him and his team make sure to source flowers only from local and ethical growers — something which he says is critical to maintain a reasonable price point.

Heyworth tells me that the best way to keep the price down is by opting for native flowers: "Natives will always be cheaper because you save on import costs."
"There's an increased freight on imported roses which make them really expensive."
If you have cost in mind when deciding on flowers Heyworth says, "Choosing local and sustainable rose production is really important."
While, a lot of the hype around Valentine's Day is associated with roses Heyworth tells me that there has been a shift in demand, with a lot of people looking for more unique flower arrangements.

"When I buy flowers I am not choosing flowers based on 'an occasion' but I am buying for a person," he says. "Knowing what a person wants and likes is much more important than sticking to a tradition."
Spreading love is one of the core elements of Valentine's Day and Heyworth says giving flowers is a way to show a loved one how much you appreciate them.
"When you're choosing flowers it's always really important to know who you're buying for and taking the time to find something that would suit them — not just buying 12 roses because you think that's what you should do."
One of the biggest tips Heyworth has for those planning to purchase flowers for the big day — "don't leave it to the last minute."
As a florist he says that you'll be doing yourself (and your florist) a favour by ordering in advance.
"It takes the pressure of the florist by giving them more time to prepare and order in the right flowers for your arrangement."
