18-year-old leaves stepdad in tears with life-changing Christmas present

Makayla, an 18-year-old from Ohio had just finished high school and had a dream one night, which inspired the life-changing Christmas present she got her stepdad this year.

"I had a dream that I asked him to adopt me," she told Fox News Cleveland, adding: "My Christmas present to him was adoption papers."

Stephen Dabney has helped raise Makayla since she was five years old and "stepped up when he didn't have to," according to the teenager's mum, who is now Stephen's wife.

The couple also have a son together and 14 years on, Makayla decided she wanted the same surname as the rest of her family.

On Christmas Eve, she handed her dad a gift and filmed him opening it, knowing it would be a momentous event and reaction.

The present was a large box containing more boxes, each individually gift-wrapped with gag presents (such as lollies, coins and tinsel) along the way, with Stephen eventually getting to an envelope.

Before he was allowed to open the final part of the present - the papers - Makayla told him: "You've been my dad for 14 years - when you met my mum, you didn't even care that I was alive, in a good way. You took me in as your own.

"Since I'm a grown up, I can make my own decisions...I was wondering if you'd adopt me," she said, much to his shock.

As Stephen began crying, Makayla added: "Long overdue. Changing my name and everything".

"You'll always be the Number One man in my heart and I'll have your last name till someone takes mine [away]."

Following that there were plenty of hugs and tears to go round in the heart-warming video, posted to YouTube.
