Shark vs shark in wild drone footage

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tweeted out a clip of drone footage showing one great white shark approaching another, off the coast of Massachusetts in the US.

Originally swimming slowly, it speeds up as it closes in, and the two predators appear to physically clash before the larger one swims away.

Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries senior scientists Gregory Skomal said researchers were aware that white sharks "frequently bite each other".

"However, until this video was shot, we had never actually witnessed any kind of social interaction," he said.

"We are now examining the video more closely to determine if this was aggressive and/or defensive behaviour or, perhaps, associated with mating."

Great whites are usually solitary creatures, for which millions of Jaws-watching beachgoers are no doubt thankful.
