RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under star Maxi Shield dies after battle with cancer

RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under star Kristopher Elliot, known professionally as Maxi Shield, has died following a battle with cancer.

Shields rose to fame during Season 1 of the Australian reality series and fast became a widely beloved Sydney performer.

Universal Sydney licensee Dillon Shaw confirmed the sad news of Shield's passing in a statement posted to Instagram on Monday.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of our beloved Maxi Shield's passing," the statement began.

"In all my years in this community, there has never been a time I can remember when Maxi wasn't an iconic presence (and she'd absolutely smack you for reminding her of that).

"Maxi worked across every queer venue in Sydney, touching hearts not only across the country but around the world through her appearance on Drag Race Down Under.

"This Mardi Gras will feel different. It will be more solemn, as so many of us gather carrying the space left by her smile, her quick wit, and her remarkable spirit.

Shields was due to host a Mardi Gras trivia night this Wednesday as part of Sydney's ongoing celebrations.

"Maxi was a big personality with a heart of gold. I'm heartbroken that the world won't get to see this legend light up a stage again, and that I won't get to share another giggle over lunch with my friend," the statement continued.

"Her love, her humour, and her impact live on through the incredible Sydney talent she directly influenced, and through the scene she helped shape with such passion.

"She was a force. She was brilliant. And I will miss my friend dearly. Fly high, you incredible queen. We love you."

Shields was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of last year after being hospitalised for a swollen gland that was later diagnosed as cancerous.

Shields began an intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment plan soon after and has shared the journey openly on Instagram.

Friends and fans led the tributes online with one follower commenting: "Forever an icon and a legend 🥹May she rest in love xx 💜."

"Maxi, the impact you had on our hearts and our community will never fade 🕊," said another.

"A beautiful, talented and all round good person. You will be missed 😔❤️ xx," wrote a third.

"Very sad to read this. Sending big hugs to her family & chosen family. 💛💛💛," said a fourth.
