Woman left with hematoma after copping a flying hotdog to the face

A woman has made a trip to the emergency room after being hit by a hotdog shot out of a cannon by large green bird at a baseball game.

Kathy McVay was sitting in grandstands at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, US when the Phillies mascot took to the field.

Armed with a novelty hotdog cannon, the mascot fired hotdogs into the crowd.

And one of them headed straight for McVay’s face.

“It just came out of nowhere. And hard,” she told Sarah Bloomquist at ABC 6 News.

McVay was nursing a shoulder injury and was unable to catch or swat away the flying tube of meat.

So it clocked her right between the eyes, knocking off her glasses.

As we learned from Bloomquist’s story, McVay headed to hospital where doctors carried out a CAT scan to make sure she hadn’t suffered a concussion.

She was cleared, but sustained a small hematoma in her eye, an injury which needs to be iced every 20 minutes.

And that weird green thing in the chef’s hat?

That’s the Phanatic.

The description of him on a Wikipedia page is delightful:

“He is a large, furry, green bipedal flightless bird with an extendable tongue. According to his official biography, the Phanatic is originally from the Galápagos Islands and is the Phillies' biggest fan. The Phanatic is widely acknowledged as one of the best ballpark mascots.”

Being such an important figure, you can bet the Phanatic’s antics attracted some attention:

Despite being black and blue, McVay is being an incredibly good sport about the whole thing.

She’s not considering legal action, she told  ABC 6 News and understands why people might find her story slightly amusing.

“It gives people a good laugh, and if that makes somebody chuckle, then that's fine,” she said.

The baseball club have reportedly offered her free game tickets when she has recovered, but we’re hoping McVay also gets free hotdogs for life.
