A bloke called Peter Dutton who sells popcorn in the US has been declared the ‘People’s Prime Minister’

With all the chaos going on in Parliament House at the moment, spare a thought for Peter Dutton.

No, not the former copper trying to snag the Prime Minister’s seat, but the 30-year-old African American who runs a popcorn business in Austin, Texas.

This poor fella goes by @PeterDutton5 on Twitter and is getting a whoooooole lot of messages from confused Aussies trying to make sense of this political mess.

And while you’d expect old mate to be copping a bit of a spray, judging by the general mood of the Australian public right about now, it’s turned into quite a positive experience.

After going viral for his Tweet reminding people that he’s not the Dutton they’re looking for, people have really embraced this Peter Dutton:

And while Australia was practically without an official leader, Dutton was unofficially declared the people’s choice.

It’s a role he gratefully accepted.

He appeared on Sunrise this morning, undoubtedly winning over even more Aussie fans by announcing his favourite AD/DC song was Thunderstruck.

“AC/DC gets me through a lot of my morning runs,” he said.

Now, he’s launching a bid to get over to our great, albeit shoddily governed, country.

But because he doesn’t get the same pay packet or travel expenses as a federal member of parliament, he had turned to crowdfunding to get himself and the unofficial First Lady over to Oz.

“It’s been an honour and privilege to hold my new title as a representative of the people,” he said in an official statement.

“The support you’ve shown our growing popcorn business, calling my wife the First Lady, and even loving our unborn daughter, is something I’ll cherish forever.

“But I don’t want it to stop here.

“Australia is a beautiful country that I’ve always hoped to visit.

“I can’t wait to meet you all.

“Hopefully we can have a big Soul Popped Popcorn party, take some pictures, and show me around your beautiful country and now my second home.”

So far her only has a few donations but, given how bonkers this year has been, it wouldn’t surprise us if he did make it here and was greeted by a parade of disenfranchised voters.

It’s 2018, everyone.
