Historic church in Italy survives huge rockfall

A church in Italy has had a miraculous escape from a rock fall.

The 420-year-old church Santuario di Gallivaggio remained standing after being engulfed by the landslide, Avvenire reports.

There was only minor damage to the church, houses and a road, “against all odds”.

About 7500 cubic metres of stone and earth fell after looming since April, cutting the valley in two and closing the main road.

Supplies to the village had to be flown in by helicopter.

There’s now a rush to clear the debris in the next two weeks, ahead of tourism season.
