Twitter is 'fixing' old sayings by making them dark and depressing

Leave it to Twitter to take something nice and turn it in a dark direction.

Currently, the hashtag #FixAnAnnoyingSaying is trending on the bird-themed social media platform, and challenging anyone with an account to give an old adage a bit of a tweak.

Launched by @KattFunny and @wickedfedora the game quickly took off, sparking dozens of new sayings in just a few hours.

So, of course, Twitter account holders carefully used their 140 characters to churn out some gloriously depressing new sayings.

Because there's only so many inspirational sayings people can swallow without contracting a serious case of sarcasm.

All roads lead you to where you're supposed to be, except that one dodgy road that leads you to prison for committing a felony.

The hashtag dished out some excellent life advice:

Because the best way to cope with failure is to sleep through it and pretend it was all a horrible dream:

But among the tweets, there were some quintessential truths we can all agree upon:

Because, depending on the bag, that's animal abuse.

There was reflection on the increasing automation of jobs, reminding us once again that robots are going to render humans redundant:

Because what's the point of having jobs in the future with our planet at risk of climate change or nuclear war, right?
