EXCLUSIVE: Stephanie Beatriz is best known as Brooklyn Nine-Nine's cryptic detective Rosa Diaz but since the show ended in 2021 her career has had quite a transformation.

Nowadays, Beatriz is teasing more laughs, more chaos and more explosions in her high octane role as Quiet in Season 2 of Twisted Metal, premiering July 31 on Stan.

In an interview with 9Entertainment, Beatriz explained the reason for her major career pivot and shared why fans don't often recognise her.

The brand new season of Twisted Metal will premiere July 31, only on Stan.

Beatriz became a household name when she starred as the intimidating, mysterious detective Rosa Diaz in the comedy sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021.

When the show came to a halt, Beatriz knew she wanted to pivot from comedy to action.

"I was really interested in doing more action after the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I had gotten a little taste of it, but I wanted to try to do more," she said.

Thankfully, in Twisted Metal, based on the cult classic video game, she gets to do a lot more.

The series follows John, a motor-mouthed outsider played by Marvel star Anthony Mackie, who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

He is joined by Beatriz's character Quiet, as they face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road.

In season two, John and Quiet enter the deadly demolition derby TWISTED METAL tournament, upping not only the stakes for the characters but all the good stuff fans love.

"It's bigger, more explosions, more chaos, more unhinged humor, more blood and gore, more characters," Beatriz teased.

"One of the things that I love about our show is, yes, there is CGI stuff for sure, but a lot of the things were practically done on set. So it really created this energy on set, and I think it adds this element of chaos and energy that you just wouldn't be able to capture in the same way if it was all done in front of green screen."

The fun-filled (and often gory) action of Twisted Metal is yet another feather in Beatriz' cap.

The 44-year-old has just about done it all, from her start in theatre doing Shakespeare, to Brooklyn Nine Nine to musicals like In the Heights and Disney's beloved 2021 animation Encanto, plus dozens of other voice projects.

No matter what role she's playing, from Rosa to Mirabel to Quiet, there is one through line she hopes fans take away.

"Sometimes people ask me, 'Oh, do you get stopped on the street a lot?' but the answer is no, and hopefully it remains no, because I disappear into these characters, right?

"That's my hope, that when you see me in real life, it's very confusing and strange because it doesn't feel like the character that you met on screen, which is usually the reaction I get for Rosa Diaz, which I hope is the reaction I'm gonna get for Quiet.

"It's not me, it's someone else that I've helped to create that feels real to you, the viewer. And that's the ultimate to me, is that it feels real to you."
