'I get so nervous': Heartbreak High's Sherry-Lee Watson reveals co-stars' sweet reaction to her new lead role in Thou Shalt Not Steal

EXCLUSIVE: Australia fell in love with actress Sherry-Lee Watson in one of the biggest Aussie drama reboots in recent years.

Now she's now landed her next big role, a role she kept momentarily secret.

Watson, 25, made her TV debut as Missy Beckett in Heartbreak High (2024), a reboot of the 1990's teen drama set in Sydney.

This October, she stars alongside legends of the Australian screen in Thou Shalt Not Steal, Stan's new original crime comedy.

The Stan Original Series Thou Shalt Not Steal premieres October 17, only on Stan.

"I did one audition tape and didn't hear back for a good couple of months," Watson told 9Entertainment ahead of the show's premiere – October 17 on Stan.

"I was filming Season 2 of Heartbreak High mid last year when I got a text message from [director] Dylan [River]," she explained.

He offered her the lead role in the hit new series!

"I couldn't get too excited about it because I was on set," Watson revealed. So she celebrated quietly until she could finally share the big news with her co-stars.

"They were so supportive," said Watson of her Heartbreak High co-stars.

"As soon as they heard they were very, very excited. It was all love and support, I can't ask for a better group of humans."

Thou Shall Not Steal follows the misfits of 1980's outback Australia as they embark on a turbulent hunt for answers.

Watson plays 17-year-old Robyn, a juvenile delinquent who flees her small desert town on a perilous journey, to find the truth behind a family secret.

The rising young star joins an A-List cast including Noah Taylor (Peaky Blinders, Red Dog) and Australia's own Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings).

"It was awesome, honestly working with veterans of the industry," said Watson.

"What I really admired was how Miranda asks lots of questions. She wants to know what else she can do, staying hungry to do the best job she can and to tell the best story."

"It was really amazing. I learned so much more on this job than I could have ever learned in my entire bachelor at drama school," she added.

While working alongside Hollywood heavyweights is sure to be nerve-wracking, Watson admitted she's more "nervous" about her family's reaction.

You see, Watson is from Alice Springs the very place her character Robyn grew up in. Watson left home at age 14 to pursue a career in arts and acting.

"I never ever thought I'd be able to go back home and show everybody my work, let alone lead a series that was shot there," Watson shared.

"Never in a million years did I dream that, and I'm just so excited for my mum to see."

"I get really vulnerable when I perform. I can perform in front of anybody but as soon as my family is in the room I just get so nervous.

"I hold my family's opinion to a very high standard."
