Walking Dead stuntman's death was 'entirely preventable'

New details have emerged in court about Walking Dead stuntman John Bernecker's tragic death.

Bernecker suffered a horrific death after he fell six metres during a rehearsal for the show in July 2017. Instead of falling into an airbag, the stuntman died two days after crashing into the floor and suffering major head injuries.

During the trial in Georgia on Tuesday, Bernecker's parents, Susan and Hagen Bernecker, sat and watched as their attorney, Jeff Harris, revealed that the death was "entirely preventable," Deadline reported.

The actions by the AMC network production company led to a "slow train ride to the inevitable death of John Bernecker," Harris told the courtroom.

Harris also asserted that the production team were "complacent" and there was a "failure to plan for anything other than complete success", the outlet reported.

The fall happened during rehearsal for a fight scene with Austin Amelio, who appeared in Season 8 of the show. While there was an airbag situated at the bottom, Bernecker missed it by two metres.

"There are a zillion different ways that this stunt could have been thrown off, but there just wasn't any planning for it," the attorney said per Deadline.

The horrific scene was played for the courtroom and Harris claimed that the production team could have spent more on cardboard to avoid the incident.

"Their defense is it's his fault for not asking for more," Harris said.

Susan and Hagen Bernecker sued AMC in January 2018. The production company has denied responsibility, saying that the death was an "unforeseeable accident".

Bernecker had over 100 acting credits which dated back to 2009. He performed stunts in 24: Legacy, Get Out, The Fate of the Furious, True Detective, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2.
