Val Kilmer makes appearance with Al Pacino after announcing memoir about cancer

Val Kilmer delighted fans in LA this week when he stepped out with fellow actor Al Pacino. 

The 59-year-old Top Gun star looked in good spirits when he walked the red carpet at the Simply Shakespeare Live Read of The Merchant of Venice event at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Monday night. 

Kilmer — who in 2017 overcame a two-year battle with throat cancer — wore his signature neck scarf, which he is said to wear to hide the scar as a result of surgery on his trachea. The procedure is believed to have left the actor with a rasp in his voice and short of breath.

But Kilmer looked in good health at the event with Pacino, his good friend and co-star in the 1996 cop thriller, Heat. 

The outing comes after Kilmer announced that next year he will release his memoir, I'm Your Huckleberry — the famous line he quotes in the 1993 movie, Tombstone.

In the book, the actor promises to open up about his battle with cancer, which he kept secret from the public until he had beaten the disease with chemotherapy in 2017.

A memoir isn't the only thing Kilmer will release next year. He will also reprise his role as a Maverick in the highly anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Tom Cruise. 

"He's doing really well," Cruise told Extra of Kilmer, adding how "special" it was to be back on set with his good friend.

"It will be a great film, I promise," Kilmer also told The Hollywood Reporter. "This time around had me laughing with Tom like a high schooler. He's so funny. I hope he's saved the world enough to take a decade and re-establish himself as a great comedian as he has it in him."

The movie is set to premiere on the big screen in June 2020.
