Tony Abbott slammed after congratulating daughter Frances on shock engagement

Tony Abbott has been slammed after congratulating his 26-year-old daughter Frances Abbott on her shock engagement to former Olympic rower Sam Loch.

After the 26-year-old fitness blogger shared the news that she was set to wed her boyfriend of two weeks, the former Prime Minister tweeted in support of the happy couple.

"Really thrilled at the news of Francie and Sam’s engagement,” he wrote. "We are very proud of her and the Abbotts are looking forward to welcoming Sam into the family."

But some of Tony’s critics questioned why he was so quick to praise his daughter’s surprisingly quick engagement yet campaign against the recent marriage equality survey.

"Sanctity of marriage is ok even though she barely knows him?” One person commented. “Asking on behalf of all the wounded LGBT people you subjected to a hate campaign of lies. #hypocrite.”

Another tweeted: "So two weeks is fine to get engaged, but gay couples who have been together years, no? Right.”

Unlike her father, Frances is a same-sex marriage supporter and contributed to the Yes vote that won the survey last week. Meanwhile, Tony’s sister Christine Forster plans to marry her long-term partner Virginia Edwards next year.

Frances announced her surprising engagement news on Instagram Sunday, sharing a series of photos of her and her new 34-year-old beau.

"HEY FEYONCÉ 👋👋👋," she captioned the photos on Instagram. "Two weeks was all it took to know that forever with you was a mighty fine idea @samloch ❤."

Frances included the hashtags "#engaged #feyoncé #crazyinlove #helikeditsoheputarigonit #allthebeyoncehashtags #whywait #letsdothis #lovelovelove #allthemushystuff".

Loch later shared a photo of himself and his new fiancée, adding “with the soon to be Mrs Loch 💍.”
