Tina Fey has opened up to Oprah about losing 13kg when she was hired as a staff writer on Saturday Night Live.

The 30 Rock actress, 49, sat down with Oprah for her 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour to talk candidly about her weight fluctuations.

"I was in Chicago, and really enjoyed the food… and the big coats," Fey joked about her time starting on SNL.

But Fey assured Winfrey that she still indulges herself by choosing some lighter dessert options when sugar cravings kick in.

"I take a banana and strawberry, and put frozen cool whip on it with a chocolate drizzle, and tell myself it's a banana split," she said.

Fey went on to become the show's first female head writer, and told People in 2004 that it was a stressful time.

"I was a size 12 when I came to the show, and then I was really dealing with my stress with Krispy Kremes," Fey told the publication.

The actress credits WW (formerly Weight Watchers) for helping her shed the unwanted weight. By 2000, she was co-hosting the SNL 'Weekend Update' with Jimmy Fallon and was 13kg lighter.

Fey went on to write and direct Mean Girls, and was the brains behind the TV shows 30 Rock — in which she also starred — and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

"I feel like I am at an age where all the things I've ever thought I wanted to do, I did them. I always wanted to work at Saturday Night Live, I always wanted to have a show, I always wanted to have children…" she told Winfrey. "And I did that. So I feel like I'm trying to be quiet, and take things in. And listen. I'm waiting for something inside me to tell me what the next thing is I want to do."

Fellow SNL alum and Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler announced onstage at NBC Universal's Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday that she would be returning to host the Golden Globes 2021 with Fey.

The comedy duo, who previously starred in Saturday Night Live together, as well as Mean Girls and Sisters, last hosted the Golden Globes in 2015. At the time, they claimed it would be the last time they hosted the ceremony.
