The trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches is here, and it looks pretty damn great.

If it's been a while since you read the book, here's a plot refresher: Anne Hathaway stars as a witch who hates children, with a grand plan to turn all the world's children into mice. A young boy stumbles upon her plan at a witches' conference, and tries to stop them before they succeed. Of course, hilarious hijinks ensue.

The film also stars Stanley Tucci, Octavia Spencer, Kristin Chenoweth, and the voice of Chris Rock as its narrator.

In the trailer we see Anne Hathaway with some spectacular makeup and special effects, including one scene where she takes off a wig to reveal a bald head.

This isn't the first adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, published in 1983. You might remember the undeniably iconic 1990 version, starring Angelica Huston as the evil Grand High Witch. Dahl was allegedly very displeased with the film, because they completely changed the ending. Apparently he demanded his name be removed from the credits of the film, though acquiesced in the end.

This reboot, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to The Future, Castaway), was set to hit theatres in mid-October 2020. However, due to coronavirus restrictions, it's now being released straight to streaming platforms to make it more accessible to all.

It will stream on HBO Max in the USA, with no word yet how Aussies can access the film.
