Alfie star Shirley Anne Field dies aged 87: 'Remembered for her unbreakable spirit and amazing legacy'

Alfie star Shirley Anne Field has died at the age of 87, her family have confirmed.

The British actress ''passed away peacefully" on Sunday, it has been revealed.

In a statement, obtained by multiple outlets, her family said that Field will be "greatly missed" and "remembered for her unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy".

"It is with great sadness that we are sharing the news that Shirley Anne Field passed away peacefully on Sunday 10 December 2023, surrounded by her family and friends," the statement read.

"Shirley Anne will be greatly missed and remembered for her unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy spanning more than five decades on stage and screen."

A cause of death is not yet known.

Field is best known for the 1960 film The Entertainer, which she starred in opposite Laurence Olivier.

She also starred in 1960's Man in the Moon and 1966's hit Alfie, starring Michael Caine.

Field soon turned to TV for later roles and stage productions.

The actress also worked with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner during her career.

Field reportedly turned down the coveted role as a "Bond Girl" in the film franchise.

She was born in Essex and turned to modelling before forging a successful acting career.

Field had one daughter, Nicola Crichton-Stuart, who she shared with late racing car driver Charles Crichton-Stuart.
