Sam Smith reflects on the decision to come out as non-binary: 'I wasn't prepared for the ridicule'
Sam Smith has opened up about the choice to come out as non-binary, and the "ridicule and bullying" that immediately followed.
The 'Stay With Me' singer, 28, discussed changing pronouns to they/them in a candid interview with CBS This Morning.
"I honestly, I can't express to enough people how much courage it's taken. I wasn't prepared for the amount of ridicule. And bullying, really, that I've experienced," Smith said.

"Gender, for me, has been nothing but traumatising and challenging throughout my life... I just feel like myself. I don't feel like a man."
Smith, who made the decision in September last year, said the inevitable announcement took its toll on their mental health.
"2019 for me was a fight with my mental health. For the first time ever I started to get panic attacks and feeling anxiety," Smith said.

Last year, Smith clarified their preferred pronouns in a lengthy Twitter announcement.
