Pixies review: Beautiful, bold and special

It’s been a year of exceptional gigs for TheFIX, with John Butler Trio’s electrifying comeback at the start of the year, The Foals’ Sydney visit and actually, let’s call it, Beyonce.

So, the bar for live music has been set high for 2014. But perhaps it’s no surprise that it was met and superseded by The Pixies at their Vivid opener in Sydney.

Offering up a performance platter of the classics, with a splattering of their new material from latest album “Indie Cindy”, the American rockers proved they’ve still got it.

Smashing through their back catalogue, Black Francis and the gang commanded the attention of each member of the audience through a 24-song set, with the likes of ‘La La Love You’ and ‘Debaser’.

Unsurprisingly, those beautiful Sydney Opera House chairs were a waste, an inconvenience and if the audience could have unscrewed them (read: ripped out of ground) they would have.

But that could be overlooked because of the iconic venue’s acoustics, which ensured it was a stand-out gig with some explosive rifts. Yep, thanking the guitarist, Joey Santiago.

All in all, it was beautiful, bold and a pretty special evening from a band whose remained iconic and surprisingly humble over their 30-year career.
