Phil Collins recalls awkward, iconic run-in with Princess Diana and her lover

As is wont to happen when celebrities release memoirs, legendary anecdotes creep out of the shadows and onto the page. Such is the case with Phil Collins.

Snippets of the 65-year-old singer's new memoir, Not Dead Yet, have made their way to the internet –  including one that involves Princess Diana, her lover, and a colonoscopy.

Good ol' Phil writes that he became close with the British royals after working on Prince Charles' charity, going so far as to declare himself "part of the royals' inner sanctum" by 1991.

On an unassuming day that year, Phil "was visiting the dentist on London's Harley Street" when he became witness to history.

"A BMW pulls up and the window slides down," writes Phil, per Us Weekly. "It's Diana and, sitting in the driver's seat, an officer-class chap I recognised as James Hewitt."

James Hewitt was, of course, the former British army officer with whom Di had a five-year affair.

And Phil's story just gets wilder from there.

A smiling Diana asked him why he was in the area, then "light as you like, 'I've just had a colonoscopy. It was great. You should try it,'" Phil recalled. "[My assistant] and I look at each other. 'Did that really just happen?'"
