Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and more stars go makeup-free for 2017 Pirelli calendar

In a world where most celebrity photos are airbrushed, Pirelli has decided to put a twist on things (again) with its 2017 calendar, celebrating the natural beauty and femininity of some of Hollywood's biggest - and most glamorous - stars.

Shot by famed photographer Peter Lindbergh, 72, the calendar (which debuted in Paris this week) features 14 famed actresses, including Nicole Kidman, 49, Jessica Chastain, 39, Penélope Cruz, 42, Rooney Mara, 31, Julianne Moore, 55, Helen Mirren, 71, Lupita Nyong'o, 33, Charlotte Rampling, 70, Léa Seydoux, 31, Uma Thurman, 46, Alicia Vikander, 28, Robin Wright, 50, Kate Winslet, 41, and Zhang Ziyi, 37.

All of the stars featured are makeup-free, with each black-and-white shot showcasing their raw, un-retouched beauty.

"I wanted to use the 2017 Calendar to convey a different kind of beauty," Lindbergh said, according to E! News. "Since it's based on consumption, the present system offers a single kind of beauty, which is essentially one of youth and perfection, since its objective is to get people to consume.

"But this idea of beauty has nothing to do with the real world or with women," he continued. "Through the Pirelli Calendar, I've tried to convey a different message, which is that beauty is far more than what advertising offers us today.

"My aim was therefore to portray women in a different way. And I did this by calling in actresses who've played an important role in my life, getting as close as possible to them to take my photos."

Nicole smoldered in her photo for the calendar, as she sat in a chair in a white top and black skirt, with her blonde curly locks pulled back into a bun.

"Female power is the courage to be yourself, to be able to walk into a room and be yourself," she told the Daily Mail. "When he told me the different women he was shooting, I was very honoured to be in that group."

As was Julianne, who also talked to the site about the shoot: "I had no makeup on, messy hair and puffy eyes from just waking up. But [Lindbergh] said, 'No, no, no, you are perfect.'

"He celebrates soulfulness and doesn't think anyone isn't beautiful. He's so loving that I just couldn't say no."

Pirelli named the calendar "Emotional", adding that he wanted to show "the real world and the emotions that well up behind the faces of these women".

Mission accomplished.
