Natalie Imbruglia has opened up about her “brutal” IVF journey and shut down “absolute rubbish” rumours she’d chosen solo motherhood at 44 “over being with a man”.

The Torn singer, now 51, welcomed son Max in 2019 with a sperm donor. Speaking on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast this week, she became “emotional” while sharing a rare look into her experience seven years ago.

“It’s pretty brutal,” Imbruglia agreed during the candid chat.

She admitted the ‘two-week wait’ before finding out she pregnant was “really tough”.

“In fact, I remember when I found out I was pregnant, the one thing on my mind was every woman on the planet who was still waiting,” she said. “Oh it makes me emotional.”

Speaking of her own experience, the singer admitted there was “a lot [she didn’t know or understand” about the process, which added to the “trauma” of her experience.

“I would just say make sure you are really well informed and that you talk to women who’ve been through it,” she advised.

“Don’t go through it on your own. Have some really good friends that you can call... it can be quite lonely, can’t it?”

And while there were things about the process she “was really struggling with”, holding her son for the first time made it all worth it.

“When you meet your child, and the divine timing for it to be that child and the rings of fire I had to jump through, I would do a thousand times over,” she continued.

In the podcast, the eight-time ARIA winner revealed that she “yearned” to be a mum, but quickly shut down rumours she’d chosen motherhood “over being with a man”.

“That’s absolute rubbish,” she told Day, adding the headlines at the time “really upset” her.

“That was not the case. We just find ourselves in a situation where there’s a biological clock and you know a decision needs to be made.”

The singer married Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns in 2003 before they divorced five years later in 2008.

In 2019, Imbruglia announced she was pregnant with her first child via IVF and sperm donor, but has kept him out of the spotlight.

She shot to fame in the 1990s when she appeared on the Aussie soap Neighbours before embarking on a singing career.

She catapulted to worldwide fame with the release of a cover of her 1997 song Torn, which topped the US charts for 11 weeks and was named one of the songs of the decade by Rolling Stone. Her debut album, Left of the Middle, went on to sell seven million copies.
