It's no secret that Miley Cyrus' relationship with her dad Billy Ray Cyrus has taken a turn for the worse over the past few years.

But now, the Grammy winner has opened up about just how complicated her connection with her dad really is.

Appearing on a recent episode of Netflix's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, Cyrus shared the intimate details of her family dynamics.

"I think, what is so beautiful is that my parents, they served their children, and I know this. My parents served us and sacrificed so much for us. Anything we dreamed of, they made possible," she told Letterman when he asked if she would describe her relationship with her father as "estranged."

She said that although both parents played a huge role in who she is today, it was her mum, Tish Cyrus, who raised her.

"Honestly, my mom is my hero," she said. "Without my dad, I know – I mean, not just literally I wouldn't be sitting in this chair, I wouldn't exist – but I would not, who I am as a person, it wouldn't exist.

"Because my dad, as a creative and as an artist in the way that his brain works, has always made me feel safer in my own mind because we're very similar in our ideas," she added.

"So I think a lot of his perspective on reality and on life, I've inherited from him, more so than the way that I was raised – which really, my mom raised me."

She also shared that she inherited her "narcissism" from Billy Ray, explaining that she doesn't remember much from the Hannah Montana days outside of her own personal life.

"I have a terrible memory because I also inherited the narcissism from my father," she said. "I don't know anything about my siblings except for the part that I was doing."

Rumours have been circling of a rift in the Cyrus family since Tish filed for a divorce from Billy Ray in April, 2022.

Both have since remarried – with Billy Ray filing for divorce from his new partner on May 22 – and the weddings seemed to be a display of which side each of the Cyrus siblings had taken.

Miley, Brandi and Trace all attended their mother's wedding, while Braison and Noah didn't show up.

When Miley accepted her first ever Grammy in February, she notably left her dad out of her acceptance speech.

"I don't think I forgot anyone," she said after thanking her mom and sister and boyfriend Maxx Morando. "But I might have forgotten underwear. Bye!"
