Michael Douglas has remembered his father, Kirk Douglas, on the first anniversary of his father's death.

The 76-year-old shared a throwback photo with his legendary dad as they posed in front of a bouquet of colourful balloons.

"Can't believe it's been a year since you left us. At 103, you picked a good time to check out. I love you with all my heart!" Michael wrote alongside the sweet snap, referencing the pandemic that changed the world following Kirk's February 5, 2020, death.

Michael's wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, also left a heartfelt comment to mark the occasion.

"Love you Pappy🙏🏻😘," she wrote.

Kirk's Hollywood peers such as Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin also shared a few kind words in honour of the late actor.

"One of a kind, a legend, loved by all," wrote Hopkins, who starred alongside Kirk in the 1976 film Victory at Entebbe.

"He was the King," Baldwin agreed.

Kirk passed away in February at the age of 103, with Michael confirming the sad news in a statement.

"It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103," Michael Douglas said in a statement shared on his Facebook page. "To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.

"Kirk's life was well-lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad — I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son."
