Lindsay Lohan has paid tribute to late actress Natasha Richardson what would've been her 58th birthday.

The duo starred alongside each other in the Disney classic The Parent Trap, where Richardson played Lohan's onscreen mum.

"Happy Birthday Angel 🙏 #natasharichardson 💙," the former child star wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of them on the set of the 1998 movie.

In the film, Richardson played Elizabeth James, a fashion designer who splits from Lohan's onscreen dad Nick Parker (played by Dennis Quaid), with each getting custody of one twin in their divorce. The twin girls, Annie and Hallie (both played by Lohan), soon discover they were separated as babies during a chance meeting at summer camp and work to reunite their parents.

Last year marked 22 years since the movie and the cast got together for a virtual reunion. Lohan and Quaid were among the cast and crew who returned in the special hosted by US journalist Katie Couric.

During the reunion, Lohan paid special tribute to Richardson, who died of blunt force trauma after a skiing accident in 2009. She was 45.

"Natasha had such an elegance and grace, and she was so maternal to me," Lohan said.

Quaid agreed, adding, "Just somebody so giving and so glad to be there and transmitted that joy of being able to do what we do. It just made everything that much better."

Lindsay Lohan had just turned 12 when The Parent Trap was released in 1998.  Instagram

Richardson was married to actor Liam Neeson at the time of her death. The couple shared two children Micheál and Daniel, who were 13 and 12 when she died. In 2018, Micheál, now 25, changed his surname to Richardson to honour his late mother. And dad Neeson couldn't be prouder.

"I think he did the right thing," the actor said last year on Andy Cohen's SiriusXM show Radio Andy. "I think it was a lovely homage, it's a lovely gesture. He's not saddled with my last name which, you know, I have a certain celebrity status I guess. I'd hate for him to be constantly asked 'Oh are you Liam Neeson's son.' So, it was a lovely gesture."
