Jennifer Love Hewitt has "no idea" where speculation of a feud between her and fellow '90s screen icon Sarah Michelle Gellar originated.

The release of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie has reignited years-old rumours of tension between the co-stars, but both have firmly shut down the idea.

In a new interview with Vulture, Hewitt, 46, says she and Gellar, 48, haven't even been in touch since the original film's release in 1997.

"I haven't seen Sarah. Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out," the actress and singer told the publication.

"That's why it's so funny to me. People were like, 'Say something back.' And I'm like, 'What am I going to say? I've not seen her.'

"On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from."

Hewitt suggested the ongoing speculation of a possible feud was likely a symptom of society wanting to pit stars against one another.

"I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?" she said.

Her comments come days after Gellar addressed talk of a personal issue between her and Hewitt.

After attending the LA premiere of the new movie earlier this week, the Buffy icon shared a carousel of photos on Instagram, with some followers remarking on the fact Hewitt wasn't featured despite also being at the event.

"It makes me so sad there is ZERO recognition for Jennifer Love Hewitt," one comment said, while another claimed, "The beef is real."

Gellar nipped the discourse in the bud with a comment of her own, explaining her former co-star's absence from the photos.

"For everyone asking — I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt who is fantastic in the movie," she wrote.

"I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately JLH didn't come to the after party.

"If you have ever been to one of these it's crazy. I sadly didn't get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn't change how amazing I think they all are.

"Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online."

The feud rumours can be traced back to when Hewitt and Gellar co-starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer, in which Gellar's character was killed off.

At the time it was rumoured Hewitt demanded Gellar's character got written out of the show, but the Ghost Whisperer star has also since hosed down this claim.

She cleared the air on an episode of the I've Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario podcast last year.

"I was 18. They were not taking script notes from me. All of us were in that experience together, you know, figuring it all out and everything," she said.
