Jennifer Lawrence says she was a 'little Republican' before Donald Trump became US president

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has made a surprise political admission.

Speaking on Dear Media's Absolutely Not podcast with host Heather McMahan, Lawrence said she actually voted for late Senator John Mcain in the 2008 US election, which he lost to Barack Obama.

"I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican," the 30-year-old Hunger Games actress said.

But her political views changed in 2016 when Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States.

"I was fortunate to grow up in a Republican house where I could see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies, and I could also see that the social issues weren't in line with my views," she explained.

"But then, for me, when Donald Trump got elected that just changed everything because this is an impeached president who's broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand … I don't think it's right. It just changes things for me."

Lawrence then went on to praise Obama because when he was in office, politics would rarely be at the forefront of people's minds.

"It's so hard to remember the days when Obama was president where you woke up you would go days, maybe weeks, without thinking about the president because everything would generally be OK," she said.

Now a Democrat supporter, earlier this month Lawrence endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris ahead of next month's US election.

"I'm voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America," she told V Magazine in their special The Thought Leaders Issue. "He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being."
