Actor Hugh Jackman awarded Order of Australia medal

Hugh Jackman has been awarded the Order of Australia medal.

On Thursday September 12, during an Investitures Ceremony at Government House, Australian Governor-General David Hurley recognised the actor and performer for his services to the performing arts and the wider community, in particular for his advocacy for poverty eradication.

He was given the Companion of the Order, which is the highest of the four levels of the Order of Australia.

After the ceremony, Jackman acknowledged his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, and their two children, Oscar and Ava.

"On this occasion, I'm reminded that I share this honour with my parents, siblings, friends and, especially w Deb, Oscar & Ava," he shared on Twitter and Instagram. "There are countless teachers, coaches and mentors who've taught and inspired me along the way. I will forever be in their debt. It is humbling to be amongst so many great Australians who have outstanding achievements in so many fields. Thank you to the Governor General."

Furness was also in attendance at Government House. The actress, director and humanitarian watched on proudly.

Jackman — who has starred as Wolverine in the X-Men series, Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and, most recently, his own stage show The Man. The Music. The Show — is a supporter of the Global Poverty Project and its campaign Live Below The Line.

After a 2009 trip to Ethiopia with the human development foundation World Vision, Jackman decided to launch the Laughing Man Coffee company. He made the company a Fair Trade brand so that all workers within his company are paid appropriately for their work. Profits go to educational and community development programs in third-world countries across Africa.

It was revealed Jackman would receive the Companion of the Order in June 2019.

At the time, the actor said he was humbled.

"As the youngest son of parents who made the decision to immigrate to Australia the year before I was born, this honour is especially emotional and humbling to me," he said in a statement.
