Wonder Woman smashed box-office records, but we're all mispronouncing Gal Gadot's name

Wonder Woman is already breaking records.

The superhero film just raked in more than $100 million USD in its opening weekend in America, the highest ever box-office gross for a female director.

Director Patty Jenkins smashed the previous record held by Sam Taylor-Johnson's $85.6 USD opening for Fifty Shades of Grey.

That makes Wonder Woman the third highest movie opening this year, after Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

And the blockbuster film took in an additional $122.5 million USD internationally, bringing its worldwide opening weekend gross to more than $223 million USD.

It's also one of the highest-rated superhero films ever, based on the number of positive critic reviews its amassed on Rotten Tomatoes.

But if you think you're fancy for telling all your friends how much you love Israeli actress Gal Gadot and pronouncing her name "Gale Ga-dough", think again.

The 32-year-old star's last name does not, in fact, rhyme with escargot.

It is not the same as the titular character in French playwright Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot.

No, Gal Gadot's name is actually pronounced "Gal Ga-dot", with a hard T at the end.

Like "dot" as in a polka dot.

Gal Gadot.

And her first name is Gal, as in "What a gal!" Not "gale" as in a strong wind.

"Gal means wave" in Hebrew, the mother of two told Jimmy Kimmel last year.
