Heather Graham reveals she hasn't spoken to her parents in 30 years

Heather Graham has revealed it has been 30 years since she last spoke to her parents.

The Austin Powers actress shared her thoughts in an essay for the Wall Street Journal, recalling that "home and schools weren't happy places growing up."

Graham's father James was an FBI agent who disapproved of her choice to work in Hollywood.

"He regularly told me that the entertainment industry was evil, and that Hollywood would claim my soul if I became an actress and appeared in anything with sexual content," she wrote, explaining that her "parents were part of a generation that didn't believe in therapy or discussing personal things, so I never felt I could talk to them."

Over her career, Graham has become known as a sex symbol.

She has been named on FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World five different times and tends to steer towards roles that are "sexual" in nature – such as Felicity Shagwell in Austin Powers: The Spy who Shagged Me, porn stars Rollergirl in Boogie Nights and Sharonna in The Guru, and stripper Jade in The Hangover and The Hangover, Part III – previously saying she finds them fascinating.

Graham had repeatedly relocated as a child before settling in Agoura Hills, California, a nine years old, where she said she didn't "fit in."

She describes having to shop at discount clothing shops where her mother chose her outfits, leading her to become more of an outcast at school.

Graham left her family home at 18 after the release of her breakout film License to Drive.

"I said to myself, 'I've got to get out of here, I've got to be successful, and I've got to be a movie star,'" Graham said about her "freeing" move into a West Hollywood apartment that she managed to share with a high school classmate.

"I stopped talking to my parents when I was 25, and I'm estranged from them now. My friends are proud of me, and I'm proud of myself. I have really good friends."

Now she has a home in LA and a loft in New York City, saying she enjoys "sitting on my couch in LA at dusk as the sun sets and lights come on in the city below."
