90s fans, rejoice: Heartbreak High is reportedly getting a reboot

Eyebrow rings at the ready: Heartbreak High, arguably the defining Aussie teen drama of the 90s, is reportedly making a comeback.

According to TV Tonight, the high school series is in development for a reboot, with production company Fremantle said to be working with the format owners.

It's been 26 years since the beloved show hit Australian screens for the first time, lasting seven seasons before it was axed in 1999.

During its run, Heartbreak High launched the careers of several actors, including Callan Mulvey, Ada Nicodemou, Alex Dimitriades and Abi Tucker.

Set at the fictional Hartley High (later Hartley Heights), the series explored an array of social and adolescent themes, ranging from romance, school and family to sex, drugs and homelessness.

Its influence on Aussie teen culture and fashion was also significant — who could possibly forget the phrase "rack off!", or the bandannas, hair clips and shell necklaces?

Heartbreak High's origins lay in 1993 film The Heartbreak Kid, which starred Claudia Karvan and Dimitrades as a teacher and student at a Melbourne school.

The TV spin-off, produced by Gannon Television and filmed in Sydney, hit Aussie screens the following year, broadcast on Channel 10 before it moved to the ABC in 1997.

It was also broadcast overseas, in countries including Canada, the United States, India, Russia and several European countries.

For many who came of age during the 90s, Heartbreak High's standout character was eyebrow ring-adorned misfit Bogdan Drazic, known simply by his surname.

The character, who entered the show in season 5, propelled Mulvey to heartthrob status and saw him regularly mobbed by teen girls while out in public.

Fremantle is yet to publicly comment on the reboot or share any further details.

However, one thing is for sure: if there's no Drazic cameo, there'll be a lot of unhappy 90s kids out there...
