Harry Connick Jr recalls 'inappropriate' encounter when Frank Sinatra kissed his wife in an elevator

Harry Connick Jr has opened up about an awkward encounter with Frank Sinatra in an elevator, where the legendary singer kissed Connick Jr's now-wife on the lips.

It all began when the 52-year-old sang a Sinatra song in front of the crooner himself but froze on stage during the gig. So he then sought out old Blue Eyes to apologise for butchering his song. 

"That was an unpleasant experience because as much as I wanted to sing for him and for everyone else… I don't get nervous, but I was really nervous about it and I went blank," Connick Jr recalled during a recent interview with UK show This Morning. 

"I completely forgot the words. I was with my wife, then my girlfriend, and then we saw Frank in the elevator. I said, 'We should go, I have to explain myself.'"

Little did he know that things would go from bad to worse and Sinatra would plant a kiss on Connick Jr's then-girlfriend, Jill Goodacre.

"He looked at [her] and kind of placed her face in his hands and said, 'You're beautiful,' and he kissed her right on the mouth, walked out of the elevator and that was the end of that," Connick recalled of the legend, who died of a heart attack in 1998.

While Sinatra's actions would be deemed inappropriate now in light of the #MeToo Movement, Connick Jr admitted that he thought it was strange then as well. 

"I think it was probably unacceptable then," he said of the kiss. "But it was a situation where it was an interesting thing — I think because of my affection for him, in the context, she thought it was hilarious. But obviously it's completely inappropriate.

"I never got to sing for him again, [but] she loves to remind me of that story," Connick Jr added of Goodacre, who became his wife in 1994 and together they now share three daughters, Georgia, 23, Sarah, 22, and Charlotte, 17.
