Gordon Ramsay shares images of his helmet after a horrific cycling accident: 'lucky to be standing here'

Gordon Ramsay has stressed the importance of wearing a helmet after a horror cycling accident.

The celebrity chef took to Instagram to share the details of a horrific accident he got into whilst out riding his bike, saying that he is 'lucky to be alive'.

He shared a video imploring his 17 million followers to always wear a helmet, including a before and after photo of his cycling gear.

"This week I had a really bad accident while riding my bike in Connecticut. I'm doing ok and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries but I am a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato," he wrote, revealing a giant purple bruise on his left hip in the video.

"I'm thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life."

The comments section was flooded with messages of shock and support from his followers.

"The way my heart sank when you lifted your shirt," read one comment. "The world needs you chef!! Beyond happy to hear you are going to be okay, and thank God for that helmet! Happy Father's Day and speedy recovery goat!!"

In the video, Ramsay shared that the accident "really shook" him, adding that he's "lucky to be here" and praising the trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses and other hospital staff who aided his recovery.

"Honestly, you've got to wear a helmet," he said. "I don't care how short the journey is, I don't care, you know, the fact that these helmets cost money... they're crucial. Even with the kids, a short journey, they've got to wear a helmet.

"Now, I'm lucky to be standing here," Ramsay continued. "I am in pain, it's been a brutal week, and I am sort of getting through it. But I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet."
