Aussie Star Wars fans go crazy for The Force Awakens, film expected to shatter box-office records

Jeremy Helligar

Australian moviegoers were among the first in this galaxy to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it appears to have been worth staying up well past their bedtimes.

The long-awaited sequel hit local cinemas today in midnight showings, and the early reviews ranged from positive to ecstatic.

It's predicted to break Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows Part 2's Aussie box-office record of $29.3 million, with a likely take between $35 and $40 million. That would cover more than a lifetime of light sabers!

Chris Sebastian, Guy's younger singer brother, didn't wait in line for one of the midnight showings, but he gushed about The Force Awakens after last night's Sydney premiere.

Former Home and Away star Dan Ewing also gave the movie two thumbs way up.

Meanwhile, Sophie Monk showed her inter-galactic spirit on Instagram with a failed Princess Leia experiment.

Fan reaction on Twitter, though enthusiastic, seemed a bit more muted than expected, possibly for fear of giving away any spoilers. Many tweeted that they'd immediately block anyone who gave away even the tiniest plot point.
