Emmys 2018: Antonio Banderas' 'strange' clapping technique goes viral

And this year's winner for Most Awkward Awards Ceremony Clap goes to… Antonio Banderas.

The Spanish actor's strange clapping motion at yesterday's Emmy Awards was so bizarre that it was immediately compared to Nicole Kidman's seal-like applause at last year's Oscars ceremony.

Banderas, 58, was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of artist Pablo Picasso in Genius, but the award went to Darren Criss for his role as murderer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. However, Banderas didn't exactly go home empty-handed. After all, he did take home Kidman's crown.

While Kidman has since explained on the Kyle & Jackie O Show last year that she was "terrified of damaging" her 119-carat Harry Winston diamond rings -- that's why she clapped the way she did -- Banderas has yet to comment on his weird actions.

But one Twitter user chimed in on Banderas' behalf, saying that it's a Spanish thing.

"Btw when you clap in Spanish dance, you do the ballet fingers (claw fingers whatever you dudes are calling Antonio's clap), anyway, that's what I was taught when I did Spanish dance. So it's not as weird as you all think!!" the fan tweeted.
