Why Elon Musk could partner up with Mel Gibson for a new version of The Odyssey

Most remakes come decades after the original, but audiences could be about to get one less than six months later.

Elon Musk has vowed to create a new version of The Odyssey - Christopher Nolan’s new IMAX epic blockbuster - before the end of the year, possibly tapping Aussie actor and director Mel Gibson to direct.

But here’s the catch, the $100 million film would be created using Musk’s AI tool Grok Imagine. It would be the artificial intelligence platform’s first-ever feature-length film.

Musk has previously criticised Nolan over several aspects of the movie but, particularly, his casting of Black actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

Now, he’s vowed to make a “historically accurate” version of Homer’s famous (fictional) poem, which is based in Greek mythology.

“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk touted on his social media platform, X.

The tech trillionaire then linked out to an AI created three-minute clip of a scene from the poem.

Oscar-winning Gibson, best-known for his epics Braveheart and Passion of the Christ, has yet to respond to the idea.

He currently has four projects on the go but is in post-production stages on all of them, so may be available.

Musk’s idea has divided opinions with some on social media in support, while others suggested the SpaceX and Tesla boss had more important things to worry about as the founder of a number of multibillion-dollar companies.

British author, producer and podcaster Richard Osman urged Musk to “stay in your lane and let us enjoy Christopher Nolan” in his latest episode of his podcast The Rest is Entertainment.

His co-star Marina Hyde echoed the sentiment and labelled Musk’s attempts to bring Nolan’s box office success down “so pathetic”.

Nolan spent more than two years making the piece of trailblazing cinema, also starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, with a budget of $250 million.

It’s the first feature film to be entirely shot using IMAX film cameras.

The two-time Oscar-winning director also used 70mm film - widely considered the highest quality cinematic format available - to make the movie, resulting in sold-out screenings in IMAX cinemas around the world for weeks after its release.

Nolan revealed in a recent interview he made the conscious decision to have the dialogue in English instead of Ancient Greek, so cinemagoers could enjoy the film.

Musk said he’s “down” for his version to be delivered in Homeric Greek, with dialogue taken straight from the original poem, which dates back to the 7th and 8th Century.
