Internet in a spin as Dolly Parton is seemingly 'banned' from TikTok - but all is not as it seems

UPDATE: The internet was in a tailspin when it appeared Dolly Parton was banned from TikTok hours after joining the platform.

An account called @ItsDollyParton went live on Sunday, sharing an uplifting message in a feel-good video, but fans blasted TikTok when the account was nowhere to be found hours later.

However, Parton's TikTok 'debut' and subsequent 'ban' was not what it seemed. As it turns out, the account was a fake and had re-posted a clip Parton filmed for her charity in 2020.

"Why hello, I guess I'm on TikTok! I just dropped in to say that it will be okay," Parton says in the video before launching into song, singing to her followers, "If I can do it, so can you... I believe in you."

Hours later, the video was taken down and the account was completely wiped, with a screenshot stating the account violated "multiple Community Guidelines."

Before the impersonator account's termination, it had more than 680,000 followers and three million likes on the video.

The clip was originally posted on TikTok in 2020 by Parton's charity Imagination Library:

Parton fans had taken to Twitter to express their anger over the 'ban' on on the @itsdollyparton TikTok account, wondering what was wrong with the uplifting video.

"Okay but why is nobody talking about how Dolly Parton was banned from TikTok today? Her first day??? What did she do," one user tweeted.

Another wrote, "@DollyParton i am so sorry @tiktok_us banned you for no reason. you deserve so much better. we love you."

With any luck, the real Dolly Parton will make her TikTok debut soon.

It's been an eventful year for the '9 to 5' singer, who celebrated her milestone 75th birthday in January and also helped fund COVID-19 vaccine research.

"I felt like this was the time for me to open my heart and my hand and try to help," she said at the time, donating US$1 million (approx. $2 million) to Vanderbilt University.
