It's been a big week for Doctor Who fans.

Not only were Whovians treated to the news that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will take the mantle from Jodie Whittaker when the time lord next regenerates, now it's been confirmed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to the show for its 60th anniversary.

The Scottish Harry Potter star, 51, played the 10th Doctor, first stepping into the Tardis in 2005, and jumping out in 2010. Tate, meanwhile, played Donna Noble, his humorous companion, and first appeared in 2006 – and next year, to mark the show's 60th anniversary, the two will reunite on screens in scenes that have already been filmed.

"THEY'RE BACK! The Doctor and Donna! But… how?! He wiped her memory! If she remembers, she'll die!" returning showrunner Russell T Davies teased on Instagram.

"But, but… is it a flashback? A dream sequence? A lie? A fantasy? A parallel universe?! Alt Doctor? The Land of Fiction?! You'll find out in 2023 as Doctor Who hits its 60th – diamond! – anniversary! ♥️♥️➕🔷"

Davies concluded his post by promising he won't make any more major announcements.

"Okay. That's enough. Stop now. Stop. No more announcements… 😏"

Tennant became the 10th Doctor after Christopher Eccleston's stint came to a close, and was succeeded by The Crown star Matt Smith.

Billie Piper, meanwhile, played the 10th Doctor's first companion, Rose, before Tate took over as Donna.

Donna had her memories taken from her as the powers she had been given by the Time Lord threatened to overwhelm her brain, and notably in her time as the Doctor's companion, she helped saved civilisation from the Daleks.

In 2013, Tennant was seen in the 50th anniversary special of the show, The Day Of The Doctor.

Tennant and Tate's work together extends beyond the Doctor Who universe, and in 2011, they worked together on a stage production of Much Ado About Nothing, and Tennant has featured multiple times on Tate's sketch show, The Catherine Tate Show.

A synopsis teasing the duo's return to the Tardis did mention Donna's lost memories, which was done to save her life, and said that the Doctor had "left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die."

The synopsis added: "But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?"
