Demi Lovato's shock on stage revelation: 'My gay grandad's spirit inspires me'

Pop star Demi Lovato has opened up about her "brave" grandfather, who came out in the sixties… revealing that his spirit is what inspires her to fight for the cause.

The 21-year-old described her grandad as a "trailblazer" when presenting an award to Netflix's Orange Is the New Black at Logo TV's first Trailblazer Awards.

Demi told the audience: "I've never spoken about this before. My grandfather was brave enough to come out in the 1960s and I feel that a lot of my spirit has come from him."

She added: "He passed away a few years later and I only wish he could have been able to see all the progress that had been made."

The 'Skyscraper' singer was named grand marshal of LA's gay pride this month and is scheduled to hit the stage for famous festivities in NY this coming weekend.
