Epic David Bowie memorial scrapped after fans fail to raise enough money

ZiggyZag no more.
A three-storey lightning bolt statue to memorialise David Bowie in South London will not go ahead, after all.

Organisers behind the crowd-funding campaign - which aimed to raise £900,000 ($1.4 million) to erect the "ZiggyZag" monument - have confirmed the goal was not met, with fans gathering only £50,000 in four weeks.
"Of course, £50,000 doesn’t go anywhere near realising the ambitions of the ZiggyZag," campaign organisers said in a statement. "It will be no surprise to anyone that this crowdfund isn’t going to hit its target."
The music icon, who is married to model Iman, 61, died from cancer in January 2016, two days after his 69th birthday.
The statue, which had support of local council, was intended to mimic the red and blue lightning bolt from the late Grammy-winner's ‘Aladdin Sane’ album cover, and situated just streets away from his birthplace.
Organisers said they were still determined to celebrate the rock and roll legend in Brixton with a public piece of art, however, acknowledged a different approach to fundraising was needed.

They added, "If someone had told us a year ago that we’d raise £50,000 from nearly 700 wonderful people in just three weeks we wouldn’t have believed it possible. Thank you from the bottom of our Bowie-obsessed hearts for supporting us.”
