Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have been married for more than 15 years after tying the knot in December 2010, just months after they got engaged.

But even decades later, while reflecting on his proposal, the Hollywood heartthrob cringed and called it "unromantic".

Hemsworth was asked where he hid the diamond ring when proposing while promoting his new movie Crime 101, in which he plays a thief stealing high-value items including plenty of diamonds.

Michael "Wippa" Wipfli from Nova FM's Fitzy, Wippa & Kate show told the actor a scene in the movie reminded him of hiding his engagement ring in his sock before proposing to wife Lisa Wipfli.

Wippa then asked where Hemsworth hid his ring before proposing to the Spanish model and actress, prompting an unexpected answer.

"It's a pretty unromantic story, which my wife likes to tell pretty often," Hemsworth laughed.

"We talked about getting married before I'd even asked her to get married and it was like 'Yeah, why not?' and so that kind of takes the air out of the room.

"It felt like a 'why not, I've got nothing better on at the moment!' kind of energy, I think she's still thinking that."

The now 42-year-old father-of-three recalled having the ring in his pocket initially.

"I thought, I can't just like – I got to do something cool with it, so this is about as creative as I got - I put it in a chocolate box and hid it underneath one of the chocolates," he revealed.

"That's cute!" Wippa said but for Hemsworth, the jury's still out.

"Ahh... was it? I don't know," the actor said.

His comment prompted a little re-think of the situation for Wippa.

"Well that's the thing, she's eaten 24 [chocolates], she's about to vomit and still looking for the ring," Wippa joked.

Hemsworth agreed, saying: "That's right - she's was like, just ask me already, just ask me!"

Kate Ritchie, who is also a part of the radio trio as well as one of Hemsworth's former Home and Away co-stars gave the proposal "a three out of 10".

But she was filled with more praise for his film, which he co-stars alongside Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan and Monica Barbaro.
