"I've been in some dark places," she says. "I have been in my house with a gun and said, 'Let's just end it right there, no more pain, no more suffering', that struggle, it's real and I've been there."

The former Olympic athlete, who has undergone a gender transition to live as a woman, now plans to help cut the rate of suicides in the transgender community.

During another heartbreaking moment in the show's first episode, Caitlyn also confesses that she would isolate herself from her mother and the rest of the world as Bruce Jenner.

"I was an isolationist," Caitlyn says. "I isolated myself from the world because I didn't fit in, I was kind of stuck in the middle. Caitlyn fits into society better than Bruce.

"I'm very optimistic about the future and I'm dragging you along with me."

I Am Cait premieres in Australia on Monday, July 27 at 9.30pm on E!
