ARIAs 2018: Bob Geldof's speech with Keith Urban leaves crowd in stitches

What a way to make an introduction!

At Wednesday night's ARIA Awards, Keith Urban was joined onstage by rock legend Bob Geldof to present the final award of the night, Song of the Year. Although it didn't go exactly as planned.

The country music star, who hosted this year's music honors, gleefully brought the Boomtown Rats icon up to share the big moment, and Geldof couldn't help but get some humorous lines in along the way after Urban reminded him that he himself hosted the show in 1991.

"Apparently I did," Geldof recalled.

"Memorable experience?" joked Urban.

Geldof responded with healthy sass, "It was at a time when you don't remember these sort of things. They come and go."

"Like tonight?" quipped Urban.

"Judging by your performance, yes," Geldof playfully shot back.

To which, the crowd couldn't help but let out some nervous laughter. Not to be upstaged, Urban joked back, "I haven't even played yet! It is a tough room, it is a tough room."

And apparently, Geldof had some unfinished business to discuss. When Urban asked what brought the Irish musician to Sydney, Geldof mused, "I was in town to do some stuff. I have a new record I was playing to the record company, I'm going to South Africa tomorrow. You called me and begged me to help you out tonight."

"It's nice for someone to call and ask you for help," Urban cracked.

Geldof then proceeded to take over the duty of introducing Song of the Year, going off script as he talked about its importance.

"There's very few people who make it to the top of the game and tonight there's -- again, it is down to three or four or five people who get to have the Song of the Year, the song better than any other song ever this year, the song that from all over the world gets to win this thing," Geldof said.

Referencing a screen he was meant to read from, he concluded, "I can't read the stuff, so I'm making this up, but it sounds f------g good to me."  

Certainly an ARIA Awards for the history books.
