Radio host Ben Fordham tells Kylie Minogue his childhood daydream: 'I played it out in my head hundreds of times'

Journalist Ben Fordham had Aussie pop icon Kylie Minogue as a guest on his 2GB breakfast show this morning, during which he made a surprising confession.

While discussing the topic of dreams as Minogue was promoting her new album Disco, the TV and radio personality revealed the singer featured in his own long-held childhood daydream — the one where he catches her eye after he comes to her rescue.

"When 'Locomotion' first came out [in 1987] — so we're of similar age, right — so when it first came out I used to lock myself in my bedroom," the 43-year-old began.

"I used to put the song on and I would imagine that I was at a Kylie Minogue concert and some bad person came up on stage to try and attack you and so rescued you. I jumped up on the stage and tackled them to the ground because I kind of figured this would be my only way of impressing Kylie Minogue. I played it out — I'm not joking — I played it out in my head hundreds of times."

Fordham explained that he would play the role of both bad guy and Minogue in his fantasy, with a pillow used as a prop when he was in character as the hero. 

"I actually played both characters. I played you as Kylie singing with the hairbrush and then I'd wait for a break in the song and I'd play me jumping up on the stage which was my bed to tackle the pillow, which was the bad guy, and try to save you," he recalled. 

The revelation caught 52-year-old Minogue completely by surprise, with the singer laughing, "I threw my glasses off there! You're my hero!"
