De Armas is a Cuban-born actress, who found fame after moving to Spain at the age of 18 to pursue acting. She had a successful career in Spanish television and movie roles, and was the star of the hugely-popular teen show El Internado from 2007 to 2010.

She moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and began acting in English-speaking roles — she gained prominence from her role as an AI projection in Blade Runner 2049.

When de Armas moved to Hollywood she spoke no English at all, and had to learn while filming. This didn't stop her from being cast in some huge films — her first being Knock, Knock in 2015 alongside Keanu Reeves.
