Swedish DJ Avicii died by suicide: Report

Weeks after Swedish DJ Avicii was found dead at age 28, TMZ has reported that the musician may have taken his own life.

The May 2 report comes after Avicii's family released a statement alluding that he had contemplated suicide and had been under "extreme stress."

According to another report, Avicii's family were deeply worried about him in the lead up to his death. "Avicii's family spoke to him on the phone earlier that week and got very worried about his mental state," a source told People. "His brother flew to Oman to bring him home and arrived only a couple of hours too late."

Avicii, born Tim Bergling, was found in his hotel room in Muscat, Oman, on April 20.

"Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions," his family's statement, released last Thursday, began.

"An over-achieving perfectionist who traveled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress. When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most — music."

In 2016, Avicii had retired from public performances, citing health issues. He had suffered from acute pancreatitis, partially due to excessive drinking, and had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014.

His family added that Avicii "really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight. Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive."
