Speaking with People, the True Blood actor shared that her journey "hasn't been easy," adding that she's now also dealing with issues regarding her speech.
But she's hopeful that she will make a full recovery and be able to continue to do what she loves most.
"My first love was independent filmmaking," she said. "That's how I entered the film industry. I was working with people who were all about telling stories and telling them with integrity and truth."
She added that her husband is her "favourite person to play with," having just directed her in A Bit of Light.
"I'm not sentimental when it comes to work," she said, explaining that she wouldn't be working with Moyer if she didn't also think he was a great director.
In the film, Paquin stars as a mother who loses custody of her children due to struggles with alcoholism.

The actress told People that while she can't personally relate to her characters story as an alcoholic, she can understand the complexities of parenthood.
"Not everyone ends up having the journey with motherhood that they have hoped or had planned," Paquin said. "We're all flawed and imperfect, and Ella is kind of on some level repeating some sort of familial patterns as far as stuffing feelings down.
"It's very relatable because there's so many ways that people can get in their own way, or sort of learn to cope with trauma,"
