Amanda Bynes has filed to end her nine-year-long conservatorship.

The 35-year-old actress' lawyer, David Esquibias, told People, "Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary."

Bynes was placed under her mother's conservatorship in 2014 after she suffered a public meltdown and was admitted to an involuntary psychiatric ward.

In September, a status report which included details of Bynes' health was filed and approved by a court in California, the next update was scheduled for January 2023.

Esquibias has claimed that the actresses conservatorship was "not extended" to 2023, explaining that it is "open day to day" and will end when it is "no longer convenient for Amanda."

On Valentine's Day 2020, Bynes announced the news of her engagement to a man she met in sober living, Paul Michael.

Since her breakout roles in The Amanda Show, What a Girl Wants, and She's the Man, Bynes has battled with bipolar disorder and substance abuse issues.

Bynes' legal problems started when she was caught driving under the influence in 2012. In 2013, she was found smoking marijuana in her lobby. Later that year, she allegedly started a fire in her neighbours driveway and was put in psychiatric care for three days.

Bynes' choice to seek to end her conservatorship is similar to that of singer, Britney Spears, who recently put an end to her 14-year conservatorship.
